Pumpkin Patch

Created 9/2/01, with an emphasis on using the Bezier Curve Drawing Tool.

Okay, ready to have some fun playing with those bezier curves?  I can hear you groaning already.  Now no fair cheating and switching to that freehand tool!  I can really hear you groaning now, but that's ok.  Bezier curves are fun to play with once you get the hang of them.  Ready?  Alrighty then, let's have some fun!

20.  Select your drawing tool and change your foreground color to black and turn off the background color.  Set your drawing tool to these settings.  Make sure you have remembered to add a new layer from the previous page before you begin.

21.  Just a little explanation about Bezier Curves, first.  You must first draw a line and then release your mouse.   Then by clicking on either side of the line twice, you will pull the curve towards that direction.  The further away from the original line that you click, the sharper the curve will be.  The closer to the line you click, the smoother the line will be.  For this tutorial we are going to worry more about the curve going on one direction and how to master the sharpness or smoothness of the curve.   You may wish to open a new image to play around with this tool if you are unfamiliar with it, or have problems using the tool.  I must remind you to not cheat and switch to the freehand tool as it will defeat the purpose of what is being taught in this lesson.

22.  I like to start at the left side and work to the right, but you can start anywhere on your pumpkin.  Please refer to this image to get an idea where to place your line:

23.  Now you can also select Vector on the tool screen and adjust your curves to make them behave how you want them to if you have a problem getting them to work correctly.  Click Here for a bonus vector tutorial on adjusting bezier curves.  You are going to be following the shadow lines that you sprayed in with the airbrush tool earlier.

24.  Start at the top of the pumpkin and hold down your mouse and draw a line to the bottom of the pumpkin.  Let up on the mouse.

25.  You should have a blue line of sorts running down your pumpkin.  Now, if you are starting at the left side of your pumpkin, you are going to click to the left of the line twice.  Refer to the image above for an idea on where to click.  You may have to undo and start over a time or two before you get the hang of it.  Just remember, persistence pays off in the end.  Bezier curves can be conquered.   If you find it difficult to work with, then select vector on the tool screen and visit my Bonus Vector tutorial for the Bezier Curves.

26.  For every vertical airbrush line you added, you will need to add a bezier curve over top of it.  You may wish to place each bezier curve on it's own layer.  After you have mastered all of these curves take a quick break and come back to finish up your pumpkin.
